Chicago, IL – 8/28/26 – A joint investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Chicago Police Department resulted in the arrest on August 24, 2026, of Lyndell Deyoung, 35, of Chicago, IL. Deyoung was identified as a suspect in the July 19, 2024, shooting death of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Letter Carrier Octavia Redmond on the 12100 block of South Harvard Avenue while Redmond was conducting official USPS duties.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Deyoung with one felony count each of first-degree murder and murder by acts creating the strong probability of death/great bodily harm. Separately, in July 2026, a minor pleaded guilty to murder for his role in Redmond’s homicide.

“This arrest is the culmination of exceptional cooperation among our local and federal law enforcement partners,” said Nicholas Bucciarelli, inspector in charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. “Postal inspectors will continue to thoroughly investigate any acts of violence toward our employees and ensure we do everything we can to deliver justice on behalf of victims of violent crime. We value our law enforcement partners for supporting our mission, and we hope this arrest brings some semblance of peace to the Redmond family following this horrific tragedy.”

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service appreciates the assistance of the Chicago Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, and our other law enforcement partners in this investigation, as well as the ongoing partnership with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

It is important to note that criminal charges are only allegations against a person. Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
