Two Detroit men accused of stealing $1M in checks from Michigan mailboxes

2/10/25 – On 01/20/25, Officers from Shelby Township Police began receiving several reports of mail stolen from local businesses. Some of the mail that was stolen contained checks for large amounts of money. The case was quickly turned over to our Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
SIU reached out to, and started working, with the U.S Postal Inspection Service. SIU, with the assistance of USPIS, was able use various surveillance techniques on multiple mailboxes that had been compromised previously. Law enforcement was able to obtain a description of the vehicle and suspects. SIU and Postal Inspectors set up surveillance in the area, which revealed the suspects had arrived in a different vehicle this time. The detectives observed the same suspects from the prior thefts exit the new vehicle and start going to mailboxes, taking the outgoing mail. The suspects left the area, and SIU followed the vehicle and coordinated a take down.
The suspects, Darryl Roberts and Brad Stewart, both of Detroit, were taken into custody. Detectives were able to look inside the vehicle and found large amounts of stolen mail. The investigation, with help from FLOCK cameras, showed that Roberts and Stewart hit 27 different cities and townships throughout 6 counties in Michigan. Stewart and Roberts are responsible for almost $1,000,000 in stolen checks.
On 02/04/25, Darryl Roberts and Brad Stewart were arraigned at 41-A District Court in front of Magistrate Verploeg for Conducting a Criminal Enterprise.
Roberts and Stewart were given a $250,000 bond Cash/Surety and are required to wear a GPS tether if bond is posted.

I couldn’t be more pleased with their diligence and commitment to this case. I also want to sincerely thank the United States Postal Inspection Service for their incredible support and assistance. As for the criminals, we will pursue you and we will apprehend you. Our message is clear; if you break the law, you will be held accountable. With the support of our officers and community we will continue to keep our streets safe.” Shelby Township Chief of Police Robert J. Shelide.
