Update: Mailman charged with lawncare worker’s ‘senseless’ murder in Lithia, FL

PEN Summary: The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Mark Calloway (mailman), 60, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in Lithia.

On October 22, 2024, at 1:02 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a stabbing in the area of the 5600 block of Tanagerlake Road in Lithia.

Upon deputies’ arrival, the victim, Jacob Whitaker, 29, was found unresponsive in the roadway with several stab wounds to his upper torso. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

Through investigative efforts, detectives discovered that Calloway and Whitaker had engaged in a verbal altercation that became physical, during which Calloway stabbed the victim several times.

“I can’t imagine the pain this senseless loss has brought to the victim’s family and loved ones. I sincerely hope this arrest provides them peace of mind and closure as they continue to grieve,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We will not tolerate this type of senseless violence in our community.”

Calloway is currently facing one charge of Second-Degree Murder with a Weapon.
