‘Unacceptable,’ Kansas Secretary of State raises concern over Postal Service’s handling of ballots
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – 9/10/24 – Kansas Secretary of State of Scott Schwab is raising concerns over the Postal Service’s mishandling of legally cast primary election ballots.
Schwab says he is working to seek assurance that any issues will rectified for the general election in November.
On Monday, Schwab’s office says he sent a letter to the postmaster general outlining his concerns that approximately 1,000 Kansans were either properly postmarked but received by county election officers after the three-day grace period or lacked a required postmark.
“Some ballots were not counted because they lacked the required postmark by the U.S. Postal Service, a simple and easy step. This is unacceptable,” Schwab said. “Proper and timely handling of mail ballots is a key aspect to maintaining trust in our election system.” Read more

During the recent primary election in Kansas, voters had the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to cast a ballot. Over 18 percent chose to do so by mail. Kansas law requires that an advance mail ballot must be postmarked no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day and received within three days of the election for the ballot to be counted.
