Trump’s Favorite Postmaster Is Surviving Biden – and Maybe Even Saving the USPS

4/14/22 – USPS News Link: Bloomberg notes USPS successes

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s efforts to modernize the Postal Service are the subject of a lengthy article in Bloomberg Businessweek.

The feature details the challenges facing USPS when DeJoy became the 75th postmaster general, in 2020, including the effects of COVID-19 on the organization’s 644,000-member workforce and the issues associated with the increase in mail-in voting during that year’s elections.

As the March 31 article points out, though, DeJoy is helping the Postal Service get back on track through Delivering for America, the organization’s 10-year plan to improve its finances and service.

For example, the postmaster general tells Bloomberg Businessweek that USPS had relied too heavily on unreliable air transportation to fly mail across the country.

His solution: Shift some First-Class Mail back to trucks, which added a day or two of delivery time to some mail, but is allowing the Postal Service to provide more cost-efficient, predictable service.

Delivering for America is also targeting employee turnover, including converting as many as 63,000 precareer workers to full career status so they’ll stick around. Although this will be costly, DeJoy says, it will save money in the long run.

The piece also discusses the recent passage of the Postal Service Reform Act, along with the organization’s other efforts to move into the future.

“I take seriously the fact that we’re an independent agency,” DeJoy says. “I have a lot of authority, and I use it, right? And I’m getting us to be more bold.”

  1. Rick,
The article you cited in your response to Postal Joe (me) was the article I was talking about in my post but inadvertently noted it as “a few days ago” and it should have read “a few days before this article” which was April 14! Thanks for all you do to keep us all informed!

Thanks for participating. I totally agree – they should have left our health care and choices alone…improve it, don’t dissect it.

  2. Rick,
PMG DeJoy did advocate for medicare integration for retirees as part of the reforms! Please read his speech before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security on August 21, 2020!

But, I do understand what you mean when you say that you “approve of neither”, I have been reading your comments for years and share the same beliefs! I guess I can’t believe that this plan actually became law, it’s an insult to all USPS employees who are federal employees and retirees and should be treated as such! And I do agree that he’s trying to turn the USPS around, I just don’t like them messing around with our healthcare plan!!

Thanks. My point was that the Postal Reform Act was NOT written by DeJoy – yes, he spoke in favor of integrating retirees into Medicare…as did ALL of the unions. Personally, I did sign up for medicare but I signed up 3 years late because I could not afford to pay for my FEHB B/C to cover my wife and pay for medicare also. My wife was not old enough at that time to have medicare. Because of this I pay $51.00 more per month for medicare than others…a late enrollment penalty of 30%…FOREVER! So, damned wrong.

  3. This article is confusing because just a few days ago PEN was criticizing the new Postal health care plan now you’re giving DeJoy a thumbs up??? We’ll have to see PEN’s viewpoint is after the new health care plan kicks in with higher costs and fewer choices! The
Postal service will be saving money on the backs of retirees healthcare integration with Medicare!
You know it’s sad that most future retirees are under FERS plan which basically cuts their retirement pension in half, now they won’t have a choice as to whether or not to shell out more $$ for medicare! How much more can we give up? The FERS (1984) plan was supposed to save Uncle Sam a bundle by shifting to SS, now were shifting healthcare costs to Medicare!

What ever happened to the $100+ billions Congress stole form the USPS when the USPS overpaid into the pension funds, why wasn’t that money used to prepay healthcare 75 years into the future??

The article was written by USPS – NOT PEN! I did NOT give PMG DeJoy a thumbs up for creating the Postal Reform Act or the new postal employee health plan. I give DeJoy thumbs up for at least trying to save the future of USPS…unlike any of his predecessors. DeJoy had nothing to do with creating either of these – the vast majority of both the reform act and the USPS health plan was written by democrats and unions with most of them under the Biden administrations guidance. I approve of neither… not the reform plan, the coming USPS health plan, and certainly not forcing postal employees into medicare coverage. Read my article/coverage here: https://postalemployeenetwork.com/news/2022/04/what-the-postal-reform-act-will-not-do/

  4. When will you finally settle the NRP Lawsuit you lost? You owe your dedicated Postal employees Billions of dollars in settlement! So how did your NRP scam work out? Not too good!

  5. Donahoe, not DeJoy, was the pmg that destroyed the USPS (along with it being an outdated, passed by by technology service).
Unfortunately, the vast majority of carriers (my job in the USPS) would rather rely on the union, etc. to tell them what to think and what to say vs. having an original thought of their own, so they parrot themselves with talking points and narratives that most don’t even know what they mean, let alone what they’re about.

    Amen. So true.
