Video: Apologetic postal worker blames substance abuse for late, trashed mail

Apologetic CarrierWARRENSBURG, Mo. – A Warrensburg postal worker who pleaded guilty to federal charges of drinking on the job and dumping mail in the trash said he never meant to hurt anyone. “I just had some problems,” said David Thompson.

In an interview with KMBC 9 News, Thompson was apologetic and remorseful, saying that he worked at the post office for 21 years without any problems, but when things spun out of control, his problems grew as fast as his piles of mail.

An undercover investigation began after reports that Thompson was drinking on the job. In December 2013, a secret camera was put in his mail truck. It caught him drinking as many as eight beers per day while he was on his route. It also revealed that a lot of mail never got delivered or was very late, in all about 20,000 pieces of mail.
