As a mailman with 31 years, I find this thievery so disgusting, so vile, and worthy of the harshest of punishments.
Not only are the thieves stealing from their customers, but it takes time to isolate and open these letters, so they are also stealing from their employer, the Postal Service.
The thief is making it appear that the envelopes were torn by the automated machinery, so he does not even have to be careful when ripping them open.
