AG’s Office Obtains Conviction of New Orleans Postal Worker for Tax Fraud

As a result of a joint tax fraud investigation conducted by the Attorney General’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Revenue, a New Orleans woman pleaded guilty on Friday in Baton Rouge to a violation of Louisiana Revised Statute 14:132, felony injuring public records, in order to defraud the state out of more than $16,000, announced Attorney General Buddy Caldwell. 25-year-old Charnell Haymond, of 6921 Bunker Hill Road, was charged in April, 2014 with stealing personal information while employed by the U.S. Postal Service and then fraudulently filing a state tax return to steal over $16,000 from Louisiana. 19th Judicial District Court Judge Louis Daniel sentenced Haymond to five years in prison, which was suspended, and placed her on three years of supervised probation with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. Conditions of her probation include paying the state $16,180 in restitution and 50 hours of community service.

The Attorney General’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Revenue are working together more closely than ever since the two agencies started a joint tax fraud fighting initiative during March, 2013.

“My office fights fraud perpetrated on Louisiana and its citizens every day,” said Attorney General Caldwell. “Whether it’s tax fraud, Medicaid fraud, insurance fraud, or other crimes and deceptive acts, my staff at the Attorney General’s Office takes aggressive action to protect the interests of Louisiana and its citizens in both the criminal and civil arenas.” Caldwell added, “We are very pleased to be working with Secretary Barfield and his staff at the Louisiana Department of Revenue to bring these tax cheats to justice and recover the funds Louisiana is rightfully due.”

“This case should serve as a strong reminder that fraudulent tax activities will not be tolerated,” said Secretary of Revenue Tim Barfield. “Our methods for detecting fraud are improving tremendously as we continue to implement more criminal investigation techniques, and our partnership with the Attorney General’s Office indicates our overall commitment to fighting tax fraud and holding citizens accountable.”
