First-ever ‘National Superhero Day’ attracts public attention

USPS – May 13, 2014

Employees at more than 35 events nationwide came together last month to congratulate co-workers who were recognized with the first-ever USPS Postal Hero Awards.

The Corporate Communications team used the newsworthy day to recognize the heroism and community service of postal workers and to heighten public awareness of the collaboration with Sony to promote Priority Mail and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” film.

Most of the events — highlights of the first-ever “National Superhero Day” — attracted widespread media coverage, with more than 30 media stories and broadcast clips relaying the exploits of the award-winning employees to the public. “The day served as a perfect time to raise awareness for those men and women who went the extra mile for customers in need,” said Corporate Communications VP Bill Whitman. 1aa-USPS-small

Whitman also commended employees whose efforts behind the scenes helped make the events successful. “It was truly a collaborative effort of many business functions across the organization,” he said. “Their efforts to help recognize these heroes publicly within an extremely tight timeline were exemplary.”

Given the success of the national event, Whitman said Corporate Communications will schedule more public events designed to celebrate the Postal Service’s involvement with the lives and experiences of the American public. “I encourage everyone to contact their local communications teams with thoughts and suggestions on how we can continue this exciting initiative,” he said.
