Georgia Congressman Bishop Joins Effort to Delay USPS Processing Center Closures

Georgia Congressman Sanford Bishop has joined more than 40 other members of Congress asking PMG Donahoe to delay closing of USPS mail processing until spring of 2014.

Congressman Bishop stated in his letter to the PMG…

“We urge you to recognize the disastrous impact that the elimination of overnight delivery standards and closings of Area Mail Processing Centers and other facilities across the country would have on local and national unemployment,” the bipartisan group of members wrote. “The USPS is a major employer around the country and employs over 500,000 workers. With an unacceptably high unemployment rate, it would be particularly inopportune for the USPS to close facilities.”

  1. Does anyone know if the USPS can force a maintenance employee (ET) to take a detail as a custodian over 50 miles to a plant that does not need the help or force them to be carriers. Thanks.

  2. Thank you Congressman Bishop!
My wife works as a postal clerk in the Stamford P&DC which is under an excessing of employees frenzy, and included in the accelerated plans to close it at the end of this year 2013.

Stamford will lose a vital business and employment providing agency. Many small businesses in the city will feel the full impact of the closing of the plant, and might be forced to lay-off their own employees

The lost of USPS employees at the Stamford plant will bring the unemployed number to unprecedented highs! It will create more traffic on I-95,it will force excessed employees who will/or will not be relocated to the Westchester plant to pay higher NY-taxes, and continue paying CT taxes. And the worst part is many Stamford employees will not be able to bid into the Westchester plant’s few available job bids, therefore they will be forced to go over 100 to 300 miles from Stamford to whatever plants are available in other States!!

  3. Congressman Bishop,

I thank you for your effort on behalf of the Middle Class working employees of the United States Postal Service. I’m a postal worker, an electronic technician in a plant that has been scheduled for accelerated closure.

I despair that my own Congressional Representative, Doug Lamborn, will do anything in this area, despite the fact that our district stands to lose millions of dollars in employee salaries and possibly revenues from very large presorted first class mailers.

Thank you for your attention to, and action taken on, one of the largest concerns of the American people: JOBS!

    Gratefully and sincerely yours,
    Duncan Wilson
