April/May Comments to PRC Favor Delivery for 5 days or LESS!
by Rick Owens – Postal Employee Network
According to comments submitted to the PRC during the months of April and May 2010 the majority of respondents favored changing delivery to 5 days or LESS. In fact, the PRC report reflects the following:
Respondents In Favor Of Changing to 5 Day Delivery: 1483
Favoring 5 Day Delivery With Conditions: 301 [ see report for condition codes ]
Total Comments Favoring 5 Day Delivery: 1784
Respondents In Favor Of Keeping 6 Day Delivery: 932
Favoring 6 Day Delivery With Conditions: 747 [ see report for condition codes ]
Total Comments Favoring 6 Day Delivery: 1679
Comparison: The PRC report reflects that only 105 more respondents reported favoring 5 day delivery over maintaining 6 day delivery. An additional total of 335 respondents report that they are in favor of 4 days or less mail delivery.
Respondents Favoring 4 Day Delivery: 42
Respondents Favoring 3 Day Delivery: 271
Respondents Favoring 2 or Less Days of Delivery: 22
Respondents Favoring 7 Day Delivery: 12
I do not believe the case is closed on this issue as yet. The vast majority of Americans are not even aware that they have the option to provide their opinion regarding maintaining 6 days of delivery or changing to 5 or less days. I believe the issue should be decided by the majority of our citizens – not by any union or by any group of mailers. I do feel that the loss of 6 day delivery will greatly impact the future of USPS and may have devastating results on the growth of our business model. The careers of many postal employees may take a turn for the worst.

Stop Saturday delivery and we will be just fine for years and years.
The mail carrier in todays market deliveres 80% bulk mail and the otherv 20% is divided between first class, magazines and parcels. If you were to eliminate that 80% alltogether two day delivery would suffice. Now I know the marketers and retailers will not let this happen and yes they do lobby our congress, but the price of bulk mailings is so inexspencive that they blanket communities with advertising that just goes into the trash.
Would it not make sense for them to pay more and use more intelligent mail lists so advertising would go where it was wanted? The community college in my area mailed three coverages of which one was a catalog of classes in one week. Do you think half of the residents read these or even a fourth my quess would be more like ten percent. I could go on about “junk mail” but take a week and put your mail into two piles one for your magazines and first class mail and another pile for the other mail and see the difference. This second pile is a waste of time money and natural resources so much for being green!
Thye day of the horse and buggy are gone and so are the days of the old post office. I know there will be a need for the postal service for a good long while but it needs to change as the world has.
Advocates for six day delivery are thinking just of themselves who else would delivery the bulk mail (junk mail)for just pennies. Note you do not see the postage amount on the bulk mailings.
Just wanted to share these thoughts if I were in charge bulk rates go way up!
