Rep. Putnam Calls for GAO Audit On Closing Polk Mail Center

U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam has asked the U.S. Postal Service nicely, now he is getting tougher on the semi-governmental corporation’s decision to move part of its local mail processing operation from Lakeland to Tampa.

Putnam confirmed Thursday that he has asked the General Accounting Office, the government’s nonpartisan accounting body, to look into the decision to move the sorting system out of the Lakeland Hills Boulevard center.

“A number of questions have arisen on both the process the Postal Service used to make this decision and the conclusions it has drawn regarding the benefits to efficiency as well as the negative impact this could have locally,” Putnam said Thursday. “It is simply good sense to ask the GAO, a credible third party, to take a second look.” Read more
