10.01.2014 – The Postal Service’s extensive network can handle ongoing increases in package deliveries, PMG Pat Donahoe said during a recent TV news interview.

USPS has experienced significant growth in its package business in recent years and recently reduced prices for high-volume mailers, part of an aggressive push to attract more business customers.

“We are actively seeking to grow the package business,” Donahoe said on the “Government Matters” public affairs show. “We’ve got a great network. … People are out every day — six days a week, sometimes seven days a week. We’ve got plenty of capacity.”

The Postal Service’s focus on packages reflects the organization’s commitment to meeting customers’ changing needs, the PMG said. People are sending fewer letters and bill payments through the mail, but they’re shopping more online and having products shipped to their homes.

“We’ve got to make some changes in order to get ourselves in a good position cost-wise going forward,” Donahoe said.

USPS also remains committed to its obligation to serve all customers, the PMG said. “We serve everybody in the United States, including places like Alaska, Guam, Puerto Rico. It’s the basis of what the Postal Service stands for.”
