Letter carrier rescues mother and child
USPS – July 21, 2014 – Orlando, FL, Letter Carrier Rena McVey had just completed her route and was on her way back to the Lee Vista Carrier Annex when she saw two vehicles involved in an accident. McVey stopped to offer assistance. She found a 7-year-old boy on his back in obvious pain. When his mother tried to lift him, McVey convinced her not to move the boy to prevent further injury.
McVey stayed with the mother and boy and comforted them until emergency personnel arrived.
A few days later, McVey received a call from the boy’s mother, thanking her. She told McVey her son was released from the intensive care unit and would have a complete recovery.
The Lee Vista team presented McVey with a hero award trophy. This is the second time McVey has been recognized for her heroic actions. In January 2012, McVey performed the Heimlich Maneuver on a customer who was choking.
