Walterboro, SC, Rural Carrier Warren Malphrus became concerned when he noticed a customer hadn’t collected mail in several days. Her car was in the driveway, so he knocked on the front door. There was no answer. Malphrus reported the incident to his Postmaster who called police. They entered the house and found the customer had died. Later, the customer’s family left a note in the mailbox for Malphrus to find thanking him for his concern.

Clayton, NJ, Letter Carrier Joy Melita was on her route when she noticed a distraught boy walking toward her. The boy said he woke up in an empty school bus a few blocks away. She called 911 and stayed with the 5-year-old until police arrived. Police later determined the bus driver had dropped off students at a school, then parked the vehicle in a residential area and left it unattended, unaware the boy was sleeping on one of the seats.

Warren, MI, Letter Carrier Anthony Gnagi was delivering mail to a residence when he heard a faint cry for help. He went to the garage and found a woman who had fallen and injured herself. Gnagi called 911 and stayed with her until emergency responders arrived. The woman’s daughter later sent Gnagi a card thanking him for helping her mother and for being “a wonderful caring person.”

Colorado Springs, CO, Distribution Clerk Gerard Beaupre saw a co-worker collapse and ran to help him. The co-worker had stopped breathing. Beaupre performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. The employee was taken to a hospital, where he recovered. Beaupre’s quick actions are credited with saving the employee’s life.

Franklin, MA, Letter Carrier Thomas Rockwell was at the Post Office when a truck arrived with a load of mail. After the driver turned off the motor and left the vehicle, the engine caught fire. Rockwell instructed nearby employees to call 911 and grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. He then helped remove the mail from the truck. Moments later, the engine fire reignited. Rockwell once again used a fire extinguisher to battle the blaze until emergency responders arrived.

Snyder, TX, Retail Associate Dusty Thompson was at the Post Office when a co-worker complained about feeling ill and began shaking. Thompson helped the woman get comfortable and instructed others to call 911. Thompson stayed with the co-worker until emergency responders arrived and took her to the hospital, where she recovered. Responders and postal employees praised Thompson’s quick actions.

South St. Paul, MN, Letter Carrier Gregory Fox became concerned when he noticed uncollected packages on the front steps of a residence. He looked through a window and saw a man on the floor. Fox called 911 and waited for emergency responders. The man was taken to a hospital, where he recovered.

Rutland, VT, Letter Carrier Christopher Greeno was delivering mail when he found a woman cornered by large, growling dog. The woman was visually impaired and used a cane to keep the dog at bay. Her guide dog was behind her. Greeno placed himself in front of the lunging dog and used his satchel to fend off the animal off until the owner arrived and restrained it. Greeno then helped the woman reach her destination.

Bunker Hill, IL, Rural Carrier Richard Girth attempted to deliver a package to a customer’s home, but no one answered the door. Girth sensed something was wrong. He looked in the window and saw the customer slumped in a chair. He contacted the woman’s sister, who took her to a hospital. The customer recovered and thanked Girth for his diligence.

Kansas City, MO, Personnel Processing Associate Anthony Duhart answered a telephone call from a distraught employee who threatened to kill herself and hung up. Duhart alerted Human Resources Shared Services Center Supervisor Heidi Spaan, who immediately called the employee and got her voicemail. Spaan called IT Client Support Supervisor Vincent Avera to confirm the employee’s address, then shared the information with emergency responders, who reached the employee before she harmed herself.

Chattanooga, TN, Letter Carrier Georgjetta McReynolds was delivering mail when she noticed a fire burning on the front porch of a house. No one was home. McReynolds used water from a nearby pond to douse the flames. A neighbor later arrived and thanked her for saving the house.

Hodges entered the unlocked house and found a woman on the bathroom floor. She had been there for several hours and needed medical care. Hodges called 911 and stayed with the woman until emergency responders arrived.

Lansing, MI, Custodian Carlton Downing was at the gym when he saw a man on a treadmill collapse and hit his head on the floor. Downing, who is trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), checked the man’s vital signs and determined he had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. Downing began performing CPR and instructed onlookers to call 911. Emergency responders took the man to a hospital, where he recovered.
