WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) sent a letter to United States Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General David Steiner expressing his opposition to their decision to terminate the postal contract for the Hunt Silver Lake Postal Station in Rochester. The letter urges USPS to reconsider their decision, conduct a thorough investigation on the impact on the local community, and explore alternatives that would allow postal services to remain available at the current location.
“For 67 years, Hunt’s Silver Lake Drug has provided the local Rochester community with convenient access to USPS services through their Hunt Silver Lake Postal Station,” said Rep. Finstad. “I’m disappointed in the decision to end operations at this location that many of our neighbors rely on, and I call on USPS to reconsider.”
Finstad continued, “The Hunt Silver Lake Postal Station provides the Rochester area with essential postal services for small business owners, community members with limited transportation options, and those who rely on USPS for bill payments, medications, and correspondence. I urge USPS to investigate the impact on the local community and explore alternatives for continued postal service.”
Background:
- In May of 2026, USPS announced they were terminating the contract of Hunt Silver Lake Postal Station with an effective date of June 25, 2026. This station has been in business for 67 years.
- Hunt Silver Lake is a Contract Postal Unit (CPU). CPUs are supplier-owned or leased sites, often located inside a private business like a supermarket, pharmacy, or college. They are operated by non-postal employees under contract to USPS. CPUs provide full postal services and products to the public at standard U.S. Postal Service prices.
- Under CPU contract terms, the Postal Service and CPU operators agree that either party can terminate a contract upon giving 120 days’ notice. USPS stated that terminating this contract enables them to continue to fulfill their commitment to serve communities through USPS-operated retail facilities.
