WINTHROP (WGME) — Wearing protective suits, postal inspectors removed boxes of damaged letters and packages from inside a burned out post office in Winthrop.

Fire destroyed the building on Tuesday.

As mail began moving once again Wednesday in Winthrop, postal inspectors got their first look inside the now burned post office. They found hundreds of pieces of mail destroyed.

United States Postal Inspectors removed what they could after their first time inside the destroyed Winthrop Post Office.

Firefighters put out hot spots, still smoldering after the Tuesday morning fire that left the entire building gutted.

As investigators sorted through what’s salvageable at the post office, six miles down the road, in Manchester, Winthrop residents were trying to find out if their mail made it. Read more
