Video: Mail recovery begins at Winthrop post office destroyed by fire

2/22/17 – A day after a large fire destroyed the Winthrop post office, residents and businesspeople who relied on its services stopped by the post office in neighboring Manchester to see if their mail made it through the fire.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday it would be sending all mail addressed to Winthrop post office boxes to Manchester for pick up.

The Winthrop area residents who stopped in Manchester on Wednesday were expecting everything from checks to pricey balls of yarn to the catalogs, solicitations and other mail.

“It sucks,” said Austin Knight, a Winthrop man who had a post office box.

Knight had recently ordered two T-shirts and a black baseball cap, all celebrating the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl victory. The T-shirts already arrived, but based on online shipping information, Knight said he thought the baseball cap had been at the Winthrop post office when the fire started. So he contacted the company that sold the hat, and they said they’d send him another. Read more at CentralMaine.com
