PEN Ed: As USPS cuts back on services and installs more cluster mailboxes all across the USA it seems mail theft is becoming a common threat.
SACRAMENTO – It’s a crime that’s becoming more common. Thieves break into a community mailbox – also called a cluster mailbox – and grab your mail, your money and your peace of mind.
Victims of the thefts said the crimes are an avoidable symptom of an otherwise trustworthy mail system.
“There are little frustrations, and this seems like an avoidable frustration,” said Tom Bright of Sacramento County’s Parkway community.
Bright showed ABC10 just how easy it is to break into his cluster box.
“I’ve got my fingers under the edge here,” Bright said as he wedged his fingertips under a thin aluminum panel on the back of his neighborhood’s cluster box. “If I pull, I’m in there – right now – and part of the front of this is made of aluminum. This door gets pulled open, and then you can have access to the all of the backs of all of the boxes.” Read more

Making it a quick, easy, abundant target for criminals.
What more reason does the USPS need to drop this policy?
