Keep Ransomware Away from Postal Service Data

Postal Bulletin 22704 – 6/11/26 – Postal Service employees and contractors must remain alert for ransomware and other evolving cyberthreats. Ransomware is a malicious software that can encrypt files or block access to systems until a ransom payment is demanded. Cybercriminals commonly use phishing emails, malicious links, fake websites, attachments, and unauthorized USB devices to spread ransomware.

The CyberSafe at USPS team recommends the following preventative measures to reduce the risk of an attack and operational impact:

  • Keep software, operating systems, and antivirus tools updated.
  • Be cautious when opening links, attachments, or QR codes.
  • Verify emails and requests before responding.
  • Follow Postal Service procedures for backing up important data.
  • Avoid using unauthorized devices or software.

If you believe your device may be infected with ransomware, stop using it, and immediately disconnect it from the network, if possible. Next, contact the Cybersecurity Operations Center at 866-877-7247 and report the incident to your manager or supervisor.

Remember: Do not continue using the infected device unless instructed by the Postal Service Computer Incident Response Team or the IT Help Desk.
