APWU: Senate Panel Postpones Consideration of Postal Bill

A Senate committee has postponed consideration of a controversial postal bill that was condemned by postal unions and others. Members of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs were scheduled to meet on Dec. 18 to act on S. 1486, which was introduced by Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) in August. 4-APWU-Small

“We’re pleased that Sen. Carper has postponed a committee vote on the bill,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “But our fight is not over.”

“We need legislation that will end the manufactured financial crisis and protect the USPS as a public postal service. The four postal unions are committed to working together to accomplish those goals,” he said.

The presidents and legislative officers of the four postal unions met with Sen. Carper and his staff on Dec. 17 to share their views about the future of the Postal Service. “We had a frank and productive discussion,” Dimondstein said.

  1. I also have been around for over 27 years. The unions officials are fighting to preserve their lifestyles (off on Saturdays and not having to do the manual labor we do). If you’re a letter carrier like me, then you should realize, THEY DO NOT WANT TO RETURN TO THEIR CRAFT POSITIONS. Less delivery days and less employees will force some of them back to their assigned jobs and they will do and say anything to prevent that. I do agree with you about the contracts with our competitors. Don’t take it personal Charles, but you should consider brushing up on your grammar before you post in the future.

  2. I have been an employee of the Postal Servuce over 25 years and it is imperative that the members of the house and congress understand that we work hard for what we have. The PMG is trying to make the company company and destroy what we have work so hard for and that us the trust and business if the American people. Don’t let him put more people in the unemployment rolls or into poverty. Help us save our jobs and hold him accountable for his reckless spending and contracts with our competitors.
