NALC Says Senate will take up S. 1789 after Easter recess

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) announced Monday evening that the Senate would not be taking up consideration of S. 1789, the 21st Century Postal Reform Act, until sometime in mid-April after Congress’ Easter recess. Lieberman is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and one of the co-sponsors of S. 1789, along with Sens. Tom Carper (D-MA), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Scott Brown (R-MA).

“Thank you to the more than 50,000 NALC members who took part in Sunday’s national teleconferences,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said, “and thank you to the thousands of letter carriers and allies who, over the past two days, flooded Senate offices with calls to voice our opposition to this deeply flawed bill. It’s this unparalleled level of commitment that will help us win the fight to preserve the Postal Service for decades to come. We hope that senators will now use this extra time to carefully analyze the Service’s financial problems, so that when the Senate resumes its business after the break, it will be prepared to work on a real reform measure designed to strengthen the agency, not dismantle it.”

  1. i agree with florida bob..
offer incentives …$25,000 and 3 years added
would entice at least 50,000 csrs workers to retire… save the post office

  2. PAUL G…..I could not have said it better myself. I have 33 years in. I would take it one step further and say half of them belong in jail. 20 years ago they at least had to make decisions. Today they really do absolutely nothing. If a decision has to be made they call their boss.

  3. where are the early outs/incentives to retire??
    $25k and 3 years for csrs…. 5 years for fers…..
make it happen, save the postal service.

  4. The Postal Management that agreed to the 2006 Transformation Plan and the 5 billion dollar payment for funding future health care for retirees now want to take us out the Federal Employees Health Care Program. Are you kidding! Postal Management cannot run what it has now. I have seen the mess in the USPS for over 35 years. It is disgusting to watch management receive wages they have not earned because the whole lot of them are incompetent. I have seen workroom floor employees perform above and beyond the call of duty while supervision is doing nothing to earn their pay. The best thing to do is fire all the PCES and EAS managers and replace them with ACCOUNTANTS. The waste I have witnessed would spin your head off your shoulders. Tried to report the wrong doings and found out no other agencies want to get involved.

  5. Please reach out to communities, too. We are with you, and we are working to convince our Senate and House representatives to do the right thing. We currently support HR3591/S1853, and will continue to do so unless S1789 is properly amended to meet the needs addressed by the comprehensive legislation.
