Albuquerque post office to be renamed after letter carrier murdered on the job

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – For the first time in 20 years, a post office in New Mexico could soon be renamed.

Congresswoman Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) introduced a bill to rename it after an Albuquerque letter carrier who was murdered on the job in 2019.

“The death of Jose Hernandez was so devastating. It was devastating news for our entire community,” said Haaland.

The 47-year-old letter carrier was shot and killed in April last year. Xavier Zamora, 17, is accused of shooting and killing Hernandez near this mailbox in southwest Albuquerque.

Hernandez, an Army veteran, was delivering mail when police say he stepped in to protect Zamora’s mother during a fight with her son.

“He clearly felt the need to try to save someone’s life and in the process lost his,” said Haaland.

Haaland has introduced a bill to rename the Five Points Post Station as the “Jose Hernandez Post Office Building.” More at KOB 4
