USPS continues efforts in Caribbean

All incoming mail is now available to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where USPS is continuing to expand service in the devastating aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Customers are receiving mail by picking it up at Post Offices or through limited delivery.

USPS is also working with the Postal Inspection Service to assess facilities, deliver supplies and fuel, and secure safe mail service in areas still reeling from the destructive storms.

Northeastern Area VP Ed Phelan, whose jurisdiction includes the Caribbean, updated President Trump on postal operations during the president’s visit to Puerto Rico last week.

Phelan advised the president that the Postal Service is up and running, even in the hardest hit regions of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He also stressed that employee and customer safety remain a top priority.

Damage to the region is extensive. Cell service, electricity, clean water and other public infrastructure remain severely hampered.

“It’s [hectic], but we’re resuming mail service,” said Vieques, PR, Postmaster Pamela Parker.

USPS is reminding employees that voluntary donations can be made to the Postal Employees’ Relief Fund through Oct. 13 to assist those who have been affected by natural disasters.
