Different requirements for May 15-16 activities

Flags should be flown at half-staff May 15.

There are different requirements for displaying flags at postal facilities during the next few days.

Friday, May 15, is Peace Officers Memorial Day, which honors police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Postal facilities are required to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff. When flown at half-staff, hoist the flag to the peak for an instant and then lower it to the half-staff position. The flag should be raised to the peak again before it’s lowered for the day.

Saturday, May 16, is Armed Forces Day, one of six days each year that postal facilities are required to fly the POW-MIA flag.

Facilities that are open Saturday must display the POW-MIA flag, which honors sacrifices made by members of the armed forces held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. The POW-MIA flag must fly below the U.S. flag.

For additional information, read the Postal Service’s guidelines on U.S. flag display and maintenance, as well as requirements for displaying the POW-MIA flag.
