  1. As a letter carrier working on the west side of San Antonio for over seventeen years, I have experienced my share of dog bites and attacks on not only myself but on my fellow letter carriers. San Antonio is second only to Los Angeles in the number of reported bites involving letter carriers. The key to prevention is awareness and preparation. Scanning the surrounding area can provide important clues about the presence of loose dogs in the area. The satchel is required any time a carrier is on a walking relay and provides that necessary barrier between the carrier and an attacking dog. Having the spray at the ready can also be beneficial but some dogs do not respond to it and continue attacking. My experience has taught me to use voice commands while attempting to retreat to the safety of the LLV or a fenced yard. Under no circumstances would I ever turn my back on a dog and try to run away.
