Seattle District Celebrates Opening of the Nation’s 50th Village Post Office

The big 5-0!
Village Post Office openings reach a milestone

Seattle District has celebrated the opening of the nation’s 50th Village Post Office (VPO) in Copalis Crossing, WA.

The new Copalis Crossing VPO is located in the Voss Acres Produce Market, owned by Sharon and Steve Voss. “In the late 1800s, the Post Office was located in the house next to our market,” said Sharon Voss. “We’re honored to carry on the postal tradition in our community.”

Seattle District Review Coordinator Doreen Karoly says VPOs make good sense. “The local business operating the VPO gets more customers in their store and the Postal Service continues providing retail service in the community,” she said.

VPOs are located in non-postal facilities, such as a community businesses, government centers and town halls. They provide the most popular postal products and services, including First-Class (Forever) stamp booklets and prepaid Priority Mail Flat Rate products.

USPS introduced the VPO as a replacement for communities lacking a postal retail facility or affected by postal consolidation efforts. Great Lakes Area leads all areas with 19 active VPOs, followed by Western Area with 11 and Eastern Area with 9.

Seven new VPOs opened Aug. 23-31. An additional 11 businesses with contracts are waiting for PO Boxes, signage and stamp shipments to open.

“We’re creating easier, more convenient access to our products and services by working with third-party retailers,” said Dean Granholm, vice president, Post Office and Delivery Operations. “The Village Post Office offers another way for us to meet our customers’ needs.”
