DMA Applauds Postal Service’s New Cost-Cutting Proposals

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) applauds Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe for proposing new cost-cutting ideas for the US Postal Service (USPS) for Congress and the postal community to examine. To return to financial stability, the Postal Service has stated that it is seeking legislative changes to allow for network and workforce adjustments.

The Postal Service faces imminent insolvency due to declining mail volume. Insolvency of the USPS will harm the $1 trillion “mail” segment of our nation’s economy and the millions of jobs it supports. Mailers can no longer fund the excess capacity in the USPS network and its corresponding employee complement through postage. USPS must right-size its network to match the new reality of lower mail volume.

“Every effort to bring the postal service back from the brink of insolvency must be examined,” said Jerry Cerasale, DMA’s senior vice president of government affairs. “We applaud the Postmaster General for expanding that dialogue.”

  1. Direct mailers are the snake of the business world. They lobby the Postal Service with millions of dollars to promote “junk mail” or flyers. They complain that they pay too much. Since when is it too much to pay pennies on the dollar and saturate the mail stream while paying the employee $20.00 an hr to deliver it? The average customer pays .45 for a letter and I know for a fact the Direct mailers pay as little as .10 per piece. Not only that, if an advertiser for example sells patio furniture sets, bedroom furniture, or gets a new patient(s) to visit a doctors/dentist office, That will pay for the mailing in itself. The rest is pure profit. Non profit mail and buik rate/permit mail should be eliminated. I know I am the one who delivers your trash mail…..

  2. In Houston Texas the District Manager was getting a 90K performance bonus every 3 months. It is pretty hard to understand this and many of the other suspicious things that occur on a daily basis. The majority of the management clowns would be overpaid at minimum wage.

  3. The Direct Mailers Association is a lobby for the business mailers.
These business mailers pay such low rates I don’t see how the Postal
Service makes much revenue from them.
What they are saying is don’t raise our costs but instead cut your employees
    pay and benefits.
These mailers are not funding anything but their own bottom line.

  4. Would I want an organization that has overpaid 50 BILLION…. that’s BILLION….dollars to various government entities over the past 40 years handling my health insurance preiums and pension contributions? Hell, no. Why has nobody’s head rolled over that?
By the way, Mr. PMG, why are you paying re-location costs for a new postmaster at a major Jersey Shore office when you have dozens of qualified candidates for the job within 50 miles? Is it because he’s a crony of the District Manager?
