ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It’s not something you expect to see when going into a post office.
For several months, Albuquerque post offices have had run-ins with rodents.
“We had a Jan. 18 incident at the Academy Station. Then on March 26, we had an incident at the Richard Pino Station, and two weeks ago we had an incident at the main office,” said Daniel Diaz-Huerta, a spokesman for local 380 of the American Postal Workers Union.
The most recent incident happened Monday morning. During an interview with KOAT, Diaz-Huerta received a call from a postal worker informing him about a rat running around the main post office.
Some post offices have resorted to using mice traps.
“In a labor management meeting last week, the post master said he had never seen so many rat traps at the Pino Station in all of his career,” said Diaz-Huerta.
He said that post office currently has 28 traps set up.
Other than mice, some post offices have had issues with bats.
“We had a bat incident, well several bat incidents last year in September,” said Diaz-Huerta.
The American Postal Workers Union said the fix for the rodent issue comes down to staffing.
“We need to have more custodians available because some are covering two to three offices and some are crisscrossing the city. There’s just not enough. We need to have enough custodians so that they can both tackle the inside of the office and also the exterior, landscaping, cutting the weeds, the trees, the bushes,” said Diaz-Huerta. More at KOAT
