Rocky Hill, CT, Letter Carrier Kenneth Stewart was delivering mail to a home on a winter day when he came upon a man lying on the ground. The 95-year-old said he fell two hours earlier trying to pick up a newspaper. After Stewart called 911, emergency responders took the injured man to a hospital where he recovered. Stewart later received a letter from the man’s grandson thanking him for helping save his grandfather’s life.

While delivering mail in Northampton, MA, Letter Carrier Heather Labrecque saw a woman fall on the icy street. The woman was wearing a housecoat and appeared disoriented. After Labrecque called 911, she helped the woman into her LLV and kept her warm until help arrived.

Vienna, IL, Rural Carrier Monty Culbertson noticed a customer hadn’t collected his mail for several days. He became concerned and notified Officer in Charge Deborah Rigsby, who called police. Officers entered the home and found the customer dead. Officers appreciated Culbertson’s efforts.

Marshall, VA, Rural Carrier Elizabeth Badin was on her route when she came upon an overturned vehicle. A woman holding a baby was standing near the car, making a phone call. Badin comforted the woman and wrapped the baby in a blanket. She stayed with them until emergency responders arrived.

Lubbock, TX, Letter Carrier Juan Baca was on his route when he came upon a woman lying near a car in a parking lot. The woman said she had fallen after stepping out of her car. Baca called 911 and stayed with her until help arrived. The woman’s daughter later sent a letter to Baca’s manager thanking Baca. The daughter wrote her 88-year-old mother broke her hip in the fall and had to undergo surgery and was recovering. “No one saw her fall,” she continued. “It was Juan who found her … we are so thankful.”

Bowling Green, KY, Rural Carrier Gary Dunn was delivering mail when he saw a girl running across the road to get her mail. Concerned she might get hit by a passing vehicle, Dunn walked the girl back to her home and alerted one of her parents. The parent was grateful that Dunn was watching out for the girl.

Brooksville, FL, Rural Carrier Tina Raulerson was delivering mail when she found a woman lying in her driveway. The woman said she fell 90 minutes earlier and couldn’t get back to her feet. Raulerson called 911 and stayed with the 86-year-old customer until help arrived.

Bear Creek, NC, Rural Carrier Sandra Spivey was delivering mail to a residence when she heard someone urgently honking a car horn. Spivey investigated and found a woman lying in her car. She said she had fallen two hours earlier and couldn’t get to her feet. She had crawled into her car and honked the horn, hoping someone would find her. The woman was grateful for Spivey’s help.

Port Huron, MI, Letter Carrier Jennifer Storey was delivering mail at a condominium complex when she smelled natural gas near one of the units. She alerted a resident who called the gas company. The company’s representatives later located the gas leak and repaired it.

Muldraugh, KY, Rural Carrier Flavia Morris was delivering mail to a residence when she smelled natural gas. Morris knocked on the door to alert the customer, who was unaware of the gas leak. Morris helped her find the source — a flame had gone out on the kitchen stove. The customer was grateful for Morris’s diligence.

As St. Paul, MN, Letter Carrier Andrew Louvar approached a house on a bitterly cold morning, he noticed a woman lying on the porch. The woman said she fell and couldn’t get to her feet. Louvar helped her up and into the house. The woman’s husband, who was asleep when she fell, later sent a letter to Louvar’s supervisor to thank him for saving his wife’s life. If Louvar hadn’t found her, he wrote, “she would have had hypothermia. …[H]e also saved my life since I couldn’t [live] without her.”
