USPS 2011 Annual Sustainability Report Released

The newly released 2011 Annual Sustainability Report shows USPS is making progress on nearly every front.

“The Postal Service is a big organization, and we’re working hard to reduce our impact on the planet we all share,” said PMG Pat Donahoe. “Our job isn’t over when the mail is delivered. We have a special responsibility to make our organization as sustainable as possible.”

Chief Sustainability Officer Thomas G. Day agreed: “By continuing to work on new strategies to reach our targets and define new and better practices to support those efforts, USPS continues to show customers and the mailing industry that it’s possible to provide great service and be sustainable at the same time.”

USPS saved more than $55 million in fiscal year 2011 by reducing energy, water, consumables use and the amount of solid waste sent to landfills. The Postal Service also recycled 215,000 tons of material, generating $24 million in new revenue.

“That’s the great thing about sustainability,” said Day. “It isn’t just good for the environment — it’s also good for business.”
