Senator Hagan Urges USPS to Seek Feedback from North Carolinians on Potential Post Office Closures

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announcement on July 26 that 20 North Carolina Post Offices face potential closure, U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) yesterday sent a letter to the Postmaster General urging the USPS to give her constituents in each community a chance to voice their concerns before any final decisions are made.

“Post Offices provide communities with more than just stamps and package pick-up services,” Hagan wrote. “Many Post Office locations are gathering centers and lifelines for the communities they serve. This is especially true for our rural communities in North Carolina, which seem to bear the brunt disproportionally of each economic challenge the nation encounters, including the current downturn.

“As the process of reviewing each postal location in North Carolina begins, I strongly urge the USPS to ensure that each affected community receives a robust and fair opportunity to participate in the process and to provide input and feedback. Accordingly, the USPS should consider fully, and with an open mind, these community comments and concerns when making a final decision with respect to each location.”

  1. if the post is run like a business find a good business person not a clerk or city carrier as the head/if they cant make a profit with who running the show fire all of them and find a business person who can/ups and fed ex know how to run a company/post office needs to do the same

  2. The postal service was created as an agency to provide service….that being the key word. The offices in larger cities that did make a profit would even out the loss of smaller offices. It was an agency not meant to make a profit…..only to provide service. Closing all the small offices in this country will not help the financial situation of USPS….it will only drive more business away.

  3. SENATOR HAGAN-I HAVE UPMOST RESPECT FOR YOUR OPINION ON THIS SUBJECT. I JUST RETIRED FROM USPS, AS A LETTER CARRIER,WITH 26 YRS. OF SERVICE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE POST OFFICE IS CONGRESS STILL CONTROLS THE POLITICAL STRINGS/MAJOR DECISIONS FOR THE POSTAL SERVICE. USPS SHOULD BE TREATED AS A INDIVIDUAL BUSINESS . CONGRESS SHOULD RELEASE CONTROL OF THE USPS 100%. CUTTING POST OFFICES THAT HAS A NEGATIVE PROFIT MARGIN IS REALLY THE ONLY WAY THE P.O. CAN GO. CUTTING OVERHEAD MAKES GOOD SENSE. THANK YOU
