USPS updates procedures for handling suspicious mail

USPS News

In the wake of several incidents earlier this month involving mailed parcels that contained incendiary materials, the Postal Service is emphasizing procedures employees should follow when encountering various types of suspicious mail.

The guidelines – issued Jan. 13 in a revised mandatory “Stand-Up Talk” — draw particular attention to steps employees should take when an emergency situation or incident involves smoke, fumes, vapors or employees exhibiting medical symptoms.

While the chances of encountering suspicious mail are very low, employees who identify any suspicious item should remember the Three Ps:

  • Package — Don’t handle the package. Isolate it.
  • People — Clear the area of people. Notify your supervisor.
  • Plan — Follow your emergency plan. Know who to contact if your supervisor isn’t available.

Employees should use Poster 205-B as a guide for handling suspicious mail and the actions to take during emergencies involving smoke, fumes, vapors or employees exhibiting medical symptoms.
