USPS DELIVERS CLEAN MESSAGE AT CONFERENCE OF FEDERAL SUSTAINABILITY LEADERS

The Postal Service is building on its reputation as a leader in sustainability among federal government agencies.

Vice President, Sustainability, Sam Pulcrano yesterday appeared at a national conference to discuss the steps USPS is taking to improve the energy performance of its 216,000 vehicles. The fleet logs more than 1.2 billion miles each year and is the largest among civilian agencies.

Pulcrano spoke in Washington, DC, at the GOVgreen Conference and Exposition — a nonpartisan event designed to bring government employees and green suppliers together.

During his presentation, Pulcrano discussed the Postal Service’s long history in using cutting-edge transportation technologies to reduce fuel use and pollution. “We’ve been plugging in for more than a hundred years,” said Pulcrano, adding that among several ground-breaking technologies, USPS today is using 30 electric vans to transport mail to processing facilities in New York City.

Pulcrano also provided information on other energy-saving and cost-cutting transportation solutions USPS is implementing, including:

  • Replacement of more than 12,000 postal vehicles in the last 12 months with more fuel-efficient models.
  • retreading program that has extended the life of more than 100,000 tires at a cost savings of $650,000 per year.
  • Improvements in truck loading and trips with a goal to reduce operating miles by more than 73 million miles.

“USPS also delivers mail in the most energy-efficient way possible — walking,” said Pulcrano. “Our carriers walk on more than 9,000 mail delivery routes every day,” he said, adding that carriers walk an additional 80,000 “park and loop” routes after driving to neighborhoods.

A second look at USPS sustainability initiatives is scheduled today, when Manager, Sustainability Initiatives, Emil Dzuray briefs conference attendees on efforts to build a “culture of conservation” within the Postal Service.
