NAPUS Attorney Tells Postmasters To Be Careful With Facebook

During the National Association of Postmasters (NAPUS) national convention Phil Jones, the NAPUS Legal Defense Plan attorney, told Postmasters…

“You cannot expect any privacy on your Facebook page,” he said. “If you put something out there that can be viewed as derogatory toward the USPS, a customer or employee, you are opening yourself up to be disciplined.”

Jones told Postmasters that there are risks in the use of computers and that they should proceed with caution. He said that using their personal computer at home to access their work e-mails is a dangerous practice because “Once you use your personal computer to access your office account, the Postal Service now has access to your personal computer’s hard drive.”

Mr. Jones advised postmasters that if they must access their work e-mails at home then they should consider purchasing another computer and utlizing a separate account that would be dedicated only to (USPS) work.

He further stated…

“…if you receive something via e-mail on your work computer that is not proper, you must immediately respond to the sender and insist he or she not send you anything like this and then you have to inform your MPOO and let him or her know you responded to the sender. “If you don’t,” he advised, “you are hung out there.”
