{"id":9278,"date":"2014-12-04T16:33:29","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T21:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=9278"},"modified":"2014-12-04T16:33:29","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T21:33:29","slug":"apwu-members-join-black-friday-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/12\/04\/apwu-members-join-black-friday-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"APWU Members Join Black Friday Protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DC-Protest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9279\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DC-Protest-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"DC Protest\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DC-Protest-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DC-Protest.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, thousands of Walmart employees across the nation protested low wages, inadequate working conditions, and illegal practices that prevent workers from forming a union.<\/p>\n<p>Protests took place throughout the country, with the biggest demonstrations being in Washington, DC, Chicago, and in cities in Texas, California, and New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, DC, employees held a sit-down strike, while in St. Paul, MN, workers organized a \u201cMarch to End Poverty Wages.\u201d In Los Angeles, Walmart employees fasted for 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Although Black Friday rallies took different forms in different cities, they all had the same message: Workers demand fair pay and full-time work.<\/p>\n<p>But Walmart employees, or \u201cassociates\u201d as the company calls them, weren\u2019t the only ones protesting on Black Friday.\u00a0 Pro-labor activists and supporting union members joined them in the fight for better working conditions \u2013 and a better standard of living.<\/p>\n<p>CNN Money noted that supporting unions included the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, the American Federation of Teachers, and our very own American Postal Workers Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last\">&#8220;The APWU supports Walmart employees\u2019 fight and will continue to stand with them to improve the working conditions of all workers,\u201d said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, thousands of Walmart employees across the nation protested low wages, inadequate working conditions, and illegal practices that prevent workers from forming a union.
