{"id":8708,"date":"2014-10-17T08:23:16","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T13:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=8708"},"modified":"2014-10-17T08:23:16","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T13:23:16","slug":"tell-the-postmaster-general-board-of-governors-stop-delaying-americas-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/10\/17\/tell-the-postmaster-general-board-of-governors-stop-delaying-americas-mail\/","title":{"rendered":"Tell the Postmaster General, Board of Governors: Stop Delaying America\u2019s Mail!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"news-date-inline\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">10\/16\/2014<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/content-images\/111414UnionPresidents.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">four postal unions are calling for a National Day of Action on Nov. 14<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to send a message to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe and the USPS Board of Governors:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Stop Delaying America\u2019s Mail! <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7249\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\" alt=\"1aa-APWU-small\" width=\"295\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Postmaster General is poised to make devastating cuts in service to the American people \u2013 cuts so severe that they will forever damage the U.S. Postal Service,\u201d the union presidents said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On Jan. 5, 2015, the USPS is slated to lower \u201cservice standards\u201d to virtually eliminate overnight delivery \u2013 including first-class mail from one address to another within the same city or town. All mail (letters, periodicals, packages) throughout the country will be delayed.<\/li>\n<li class=\"last\">Beginning Jan. 5, 2015, 82 Mail Processing &amp; Distribution Centers are scheduled to close or \u201cconsolidate operations.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese cuts will cause hardships for customers, drive away business, cause irreparable harm to the U.S. Postal Service, and lead to massive schedule changes and reassignments for employees,\u201d the presidents wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are part of a flawed management strategy that has unnecessarily sacrificed service and failed to address the cause of the Postal Service\u2019s manufactured financial crisis,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 140 plants have closed since 2012;<\/li>\n<li>As a result, mail is delivered much later in the day, well into the evening;<\/li>\n<li>Retail work is being sent to Staples, at more than 1,500 stores throughout the country;<\/li>\n<li>Door delivery is being eliminated in most new housing developments;<\/li>\n<li>Chronic understaffing frustrates customers and slows the mail, and<\/li>\n<li class=\"last\">Six-day delivery is under constant threat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe four postal unions are joining forces to protect service, fight for our livelihoods, and defend our great national treasure, the U.S. Postal Service.
