{"id":8525,"date":"2014-09-24T08:36:34","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T13:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=8525"},"modified":"2014-09-24T08:36:34","modified_gmt":"2014-09-24T13:36:34","slug":"teachers-union-to-staples-ceo-were-not-buying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/09\/24\/teachers-union-to-staples-ceo-were-not-buying\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers Union to Staples CEO: We\u2019re Not Buying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>APWU &#8211; 9.24.2014<\/p>\n<p>The president of the American Federation of Teachers has a message for Staples CEO Ron Sargent: We\u2019re not buying!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"file\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/resource-files\/Staples%20AFT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" type=\"application\/pdf; length=84553\">AFT President Randi Weingarten wrote to Sargent on Sept. 17<\/a><\/span>, \u201cAs you know, teachers are critical to your profits. Last year, educators spent over $1.6 billion of their own money on school supplies and a lion\u2019s share of that money was spent at Staples stores all across the country. Some of our local affiliates have even entered into partnerships with Staples to offer discounts to teachers and other school-related staff with a goal of reducing costs to benefit the communities and families we serve. <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6981\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\" alt=\"stop-staples\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegrettably, many of these partnerships have and will continue to end as long as your company continues to participate in the privatization of postal retail operations through the \u2018Approved Shipper\u2019 program, which replaces living-wage Postal Service jobs with low-wage Staples jobs and compromises the safety and security of the mail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AFT voted to endorse the \u2018Don\u2019t Buy Staples\u2019 campaign at their national convention in mid-July. The National Education Association, with 3 million members, has also asked their members to buy school and office supplies elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Union Privilege, which provides union members and their families with valuable consumer benefits,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/resource-files\/Staples%20Union%20Plus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">announced in August<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that it would stop ordering supplies from Staples. \u201cWe believe that all Americans have a right to postal services that are provided by uniformed USPS employees who have sworn an oath to safeguard our mail and who are accountable to the American people\u2026. We will also use our email and social media channels, which reach some 1 million union members from more than 50 unions, to spread the word that the U.S. Mail should not be for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also in August, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaflcio.org\/node\/205994\" target=\"_blank\">Massachusetts AFL-CIO unanimously endorsed<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the Staples boycott. \u201cIt is important that we stand up to companies and government entities that attempt to replace good union jobs with low wage labor,\u201d said President Steven Tolman.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>APWU &#8211; 9.24.2014 The president of the American Federation of Teachers has a message for Staples CEO Ron Sargent: We\u2019re not buying!
