When employees scan a package, they hear a beep in the headset and see a route on the computer screen that is assigned to the parcel.<\/p>\n<p>USPS has deployed DSS to 8,700 Post Offices since February. Another 3,800 offices will receive the equipment by late September.<\/p>\n<p>Since DSS arrived in Cleveland, GA, this year, the scanning rate has surged to almost 100 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur scan rate went over the top with DSS,\u201d said Cleveland Postmaster Louise Nix. \u201cWe\u2019re not seeing anything that was scanned in error. It helps us do a better job for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liteblue.usps.gov\/news\/link\/2014\/07jul\/news09s2.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Passive Adaptive Scanning System<\/em><\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(PASS), which is being deployed to bigger postal facilities, serves a similar purpose. When packages arrive at facilities with PASS, employees use the technology to scan them; customers who are tracking the package at<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>usps.com<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>see the message \u201cArrival at Unit.\u201d Once the package leaves the facility, customers see \u201cOut for Delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the year, more than 4,000 PASS units will be deployed.<\/p>\n<p>The Postal Service is focused on boosting its package business, including<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liteblue.usps.gov\/news\/link\/2014\/09sep\/news03s1.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>adjusting<\/em><\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>some shipping prices to attract more business customers. USPS is also<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liteblue.usps.gov\/news\/link\/2014\/07jul\/news01s1.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>streamlining<\/em><\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>its mail processing operations, which will allow the organization to invest in additional equipment upgrades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USPS: 9\/9\/14 DSS is helping to strengthen the scanning rate at Post Offices across the nation.
