The location is just one block away from the Staples Washington Mall store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.62em; font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.87em; font-weight: 400; direction: ltr; box-sizing: border-box; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;\">Since January, APWU members and supporters have staged hundreds of protests around the country in front of the office-supply outlets over the retailer\u2019s no-bid deal with the U.S. Postal Service that established knock-off post offices in Staples stores. <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6981\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\" alt=\"stop-staples\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.62em; font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.87em; font-weight: 400; direction: ltr; box-sizing: border-box; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;\">\u201cOutsourcing postal work to Staples is one of the most ill-conceived ideas the Postal Service has come up with \u2013 and that\u2019s saying a lot,\u201d said John Dirzius, Northeast Region Coordinator for the APWU. \u201cConsumers don\u2019t want to turn over their mail to low-paid, barely-trained workers in an unsecured setting. And postal workers don\u2019t want to turn over our jobs to a private company that\u2019s closing stores left and right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.62em; font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.87em; font-weight: 400; direction: ltr; box-sizing: border-box; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;\">Staples, facing declining sales and revenue, has announced plans to close 225 stores by the end of 2015. \u201cThe Post Office is a public asset, and we\u2019re here to provide a public service \u2013 not a backdoor bailout to a struggling private company,\u201d said Bob Dempsey, Vice President of the APWU\u2019s Boston Metro Local. \u201cIf it is allowed to continue, this program will lead to the closing of neighborhood post offices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.62em; font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.87em; font-weight: 400; direction: ltr; box-sizing: border-box; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;\">USPS and Staples are clearly feeling pressure from the Stop Staples campaign. In July, they announced that they were changing the name of their partnership. However, the USPS has<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/news\/deptdiv-news-article\/boycott-still\" target=\"_blank\">acknowledged<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that the newly-renamed program is essentially the same as the old one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.62em; font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.87em; font-weight: 400; direction: ltr; box-sizing: border-box; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;\">Also in July, both national teacher unions \u2013 the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers \u2013 passed resolutions in support of the Stop Staples campaign, and 2,000 teachers and other AFT supporters protested at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
