July 10, 2014 – WASHINGTON \u2013\u00a0U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)\u00a0and\u00a0Congressman Jim Himes (D-Conn.)released the following statement regarding the United States Postal Service\u2019s (USPS) decision to cancel plans to reroute mail from the Southport Post Office. Last week, Murphy and Himes held a community meeting with the residents of Southport to hear their concerns regarding the proposed rerouting of mail deliveries:<\/p>\n
We\u2019re pleased that the USPS has decided not to reroute mail from the Southport Post Office to the Commerce Drive Post Office. Last week, we spoke with dozens of residents in the Southport community who expressed concern that the proposed rerouting would delay mail delivery and compromise services. We were proud to take their feedback to the USPS and encourage it to keep this route intact. This feedback helped USPS recognize the importance of the post office to the community, and we commend the agency for responding to our concerns so quickly. The Southport community\u2019s work to keep this route alive is a great example of the power of advocacy and teamwork, and we thank the people of Southport for their engagement on this issue.<\/em><\/p>\n
