{"id":7767,"date":"2014-06-13T16:27:44","date_gmt":"2014-06-13T21:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=7767"},"modified":"2014-06-13T16:27:44","modified_gmt":"2014-06-13T21:27:44","slug":"seiu-32bj-san-francisco-labor-council-join-stop-staples-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/06\/13\/seiu-32bj-san-francisco-labor-council-join-stop-staples-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"SEIU 32BJ, San Francisco Labor Council Join \u2018Stop Staples\u2019 Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>June 13, 2014 &#8211; SEIU 32BJ, representing 145,000 union members in 11 states and the District of Columbia, is boycotting all Staples retail stores in the U.S., Staples.com and Staples Advantage, as well as all Staples branded proprietary products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will no longer be using Staples as our union\u2019s office supplier, and we will be actively encouraging our members and allies to refrain from doing business with your company,\u201d SEUI 32BJ President H\u00e9ctor Figueroa said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/resource-files\/Staples%20Letter%20from%20Hector%20June%2011%202014%20%281%29%20%281%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">June 11 letter<\/a> [PDF] to Staples CEO Ronald Sargent. <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7249\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\" alt=\"1aa-APWU-small\" width=\"295\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unfortunate that we must take this action, but we strongly oppose your pilot program with the U.S. Postal Service to establish postal retail units in your stores staffed by low-wage, non-union, non-postal employees,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Postal Service is the largest single civilian employer of union middle-class jobs for African Americans, and Veterans (including disabled veterans), and is the largest single civilian union employer. We need more of these types of jobs to strengthen our economy and the middle class, and we will not accept your efforts to undermine them through low-wage privation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>San Francisco Labor Council<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>San Francisco Labor Council has also joined the \u2018Don\u2019t Buy Staples\u2019 campaign and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/resource-files\/Staples%20-%20SF%20Labor%20Council%20Resolution%20%281%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">voted unanimously on June 9<\/a> [PDF] to boycott the retail giant. The Council represents more than 100,000 union members and their families in the San Francisco area.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s resolution noted that, \u201caccording to the Boston Globe, \u2018Doody, the Staples executive, said the company does not want to get in the middle of the fight between the post office and its union, but acknowledged the issue could become a problem if more unions backed the postal workers.
