{"id":7684,"date":"2014-06-03T08:41:12","date_gmt":"2014-06-03T13:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=7684"},"modified":"2014-06-03T08:41:12","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T13:41:12","slug":"staples-execs-get-an-earful-at-annual-shareholders-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/06\/03\/staples-execs-get-an-earful-at-annual-shareholders-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Staples Execs Get an Earful at Annual Shareholders\u2019 Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>APWU &#8211; June 2, 2014 &#8211; Staples\u2019 board of directors got an earful on June 2, when they attended the company\u2019s annual shareholders\u2019 meeting in upscale Palo Alto, CA.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty APWU members and supporters \u2013 including students from nearby Stanford University \u2013 chanted loud enough to be heard throughout the executives\u2019 brief deliberations in the swanky Garden Court Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Mail Is Not for Sale,\u201d protesters shouted, and \u201cWhose Post Office? The people\u2019s post office!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6981\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\" alt=\"stop-staples\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Much Better<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The situation inside the meeting wasn\u2019t much better for Staples CEO Ron Sargent. Several union members held proxies, which allowed them to gain entry to the meeting and propose resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>APWU National Business Agent Shirley Taylor challenged the re-election of Robert Sulentic to Staples\u2019 board of directors, noting that he has an apparent conflict of interest. Sulentic is also CEO of CBRE, the giant real estate firm that holds an exclusive contract to sell post offices and other USPS facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement between Staples and the Postal Service is leading to post office closures and reductions in hours, Taylor pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Sulentic&#8217;s involvement with Staples postal counters constitutes self-dealing and is a violation of SEC rules on self-dealing and Staples&#8217; own ethics policies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sargent, the Staples CEO, dismissed Taylor\u2019s remarks, saying the deal with the Postal Service was simply a merchandising decision that wasn\u2019t brought before the board.<\/p>\n<p>Western Region Coordinator Omar Gonzalez proposed a resolution seeking a report about the human rights impact of the deal between the USPS and Staples.
