{"id":7156,"date":"2014-03-10T15:59:44","date_gmt":"2014-03-10T20:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=7156"},"modified":"2014-03-10T15:59:44","modified_gmt":"2014-03-10T20:59:44","slug":"mail-handlers-union-joins-stop-staples-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/03\/10\/mail-handlers-union-joins-stop-staples-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Mail Handlers Union Joins \u2018Stop Staples\u2019 Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npmhu.org\/media\/news\/mail-handlers-join-stop-staples-campaign\" target=\"_blank\">National Postal Mail Handlers Union<\/a> (NPMHU) is offering \u201cwholehearted support\u201d for the \u2018Stop Staples\u2019 campaign, the union has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npmhu.org\/media\/news\/body\/Stop-Staples-Campaign.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a>.[PDF]<\/p>\n<p>In a memorandum to the field, NPMHU President John Hegarty wrote that the union is joining with the APWU \u201cin fighting the Postal Service\u2019s decision to subcontract certain retail services at Staples office-supply stores.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/mailhandlers-small.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6441\" alt=\"mailhandlers-small\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/mailhandlers-small.gif\" width=\"322\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hegarty urged NPMHU locals to \u201cparticipate in this battle against privatization\u201d and asked them to publicize the campaign and to encourage members to sign the petition at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopstaples.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.stopstaples.com\/<\/a>. \u201cIf there is a rally or other action in your area, please participate if possible,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking together, we can stop this ill-advised action by the Postal Service, and other programs like it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>APWU President Mark Dimondstein welcomed the official announcement of support. \u201cWe greatly appreciate the support of our sister union, which is a follow-up on the verbal commitment we received from all of the postal unions to support the Stop Staples campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the true meaning of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know this will strengthen our fight for a vibrant, public Postal Service.\u201d APWU locals should be sure to reach out to our brothers and sisters in the Mail Handlers Union when they are organizing protests, he said.
