{"id":7134,"date":"2014-03-06T19:08:44","date_gmt":"2014-03-07T00:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=7134"},"modified":"2014-03-06T19:08:44","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T00:08:44","slug":"apwu-staples-decision-to-close-225-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2014\/03\/06\/apwu-staples-decision-to-close-225-stores\/","title":{"rendered":"APWU: Staples\u2019 Decision to Close 225 Stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Staples\u2019 Decision to Close 225 Stores:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Further Proof That It \u2019s a Bad Idea To Move U.S Post Offices into Staples Stores<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Staples announced today that its sales are declining, its earnings are less than expectations, and it will close 225 stores in North America by the end of 2015. &#8220;This proves, more than ever,&#8221; said APWU President Mark Dimondstein, &#8220;that it\u2019s a bad idea to turn public services over to a private company that can close stores at will, with no public input and no public comment. <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6981\" alt=\"stop-staples\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/stop-staples.gif\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Staples currently has a no-bid, sweetheart deal to operate postal counters \u2014 staffed by poorly trained, low-wage, high-turnover employees \u2014 at more than 80 of its stores,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The U.S. Postmaster General has said he plans to expand this \u201cpilot plan\u201d to 1,500 U.S. Staples\u2019 stores. And bills pending in Congress would make it easier to close and sell off U.S. Post Offices,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What would happen if service is moved to a Staples store, the nearby Post Office is closed and sold \u2014 and then Staples closes its store?,&#8221; the union president asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The U.S. mail is not for sale.
