Some of that is certainly a reflection of the economy. And some of it reflects the changing habits of our customers.

However, I want to take a moment to tell you how proud I am of your accomplishments, despite what was going on around you. You’ve brought service to record levels that were once thought unattainable. Customer satisfaction has never been better. You’ve earned us the honor of being the most trusted government agency and the third most trusted company in America. You’ve helped to reduce costs by an unprecedented $6 billion. And you’ve helped grow the business, particularly with Priority Mail.

The coming year, again, will be one of challenges and changes. We’ll continue to adapt operationally, and we’ll continue to seek the legislative change that will make our organization stronger. But don’t let that distract you. Keep doing what you’re doing — it’s the right thing. Keep providing great service. Help us to keep costs down. Lower costs keep prices down, and that keeps mail attractive.

As the economy rebounds, we’ll have a much stronger foundation for success if we follow these principles. The Postal Service has been around for more than 234 years and will be around for many years to come. That’s a fact.

Over the last few months, I’ve been talking to some of the biggest businesses in America. They’re all telling me that mail is going to be an important part of their business for a long time to come. In the next year, we’ll use the fact that mail is important to all Americans to establish a legislative and business foundation that will provide a solid financial future.

During this holiday season and into the New Year, keep sight of your priorities — first, your health, then your family and then your job.

Thank you for all you’ve done to make this organization successful. From my family to your family, have a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy New Year.

Dec. 16, 2009 As we reflect on 2009, I think we all can agree, from a business perspective, it was not an easy year.
