Co-sponsor Postal Service Protection Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/APWU-News1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6091\" title=\"APWU-News\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/APWU-News1-300x168.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/APWU-News1-300x168.gif 300w, https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/APWU-News1.gif 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>May 02, 2013<\/p>\n<p>In the past week, eight more members of the U.S. House of Representatives became <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/issues-uspsfinances\/cosponsors-pspa.htm\" target=\"_blank\">co-sponsors of the Postal Service Protection Act<\/a> (H.R. 630), a bill that would help solve the USPS financial crisis without hurting workers or mail service.<\/p>\n<p>The latest representatives to sign on as supporters of the measure are:<\/p>\n<p>Karen Bass (CA-37)<br \/>\nDenny Heck (WA-10)\u00a0<br \/>\nAndre Carson (IN-7)<br \/>\nDavid Joyce (OH-14)<br \/>\nLois Frankel (FL-22)<br \/>\nPeter King (NY-2)<br \/>\nJohn Garamendi (CA-3)<br \/>\nMaxine Waters (CA-43)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 20 U.S. senators have pledged to support the legislation as introduced in upper chamber of Congress (S. 316).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Postal Service Protection Act would provide desperately needed financial relief for the USPS and make many of the planned cutbacks in service unnecessary,\u201d said APWU President Cliff Guffey. \u201cIt would protect postal jobs and give the American people a Postal Service they can count on for the future,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Guffey called on union members to continue reaching out to lawmakers who have not yet signaled their support for the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAPWU members must make sure that lawmakers \u2014 and the public \u2014 realize that widespread plant closings will delay mail by two to three days all week long, in cities and towns across the country,\u201d he added. \u201cAdditional closures will cripple service, further weaken this great American institution, make it less relevant, and make it less competitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGaining that more support for the Postal Service Protection Act,\u201d said APWU Legislative and Political Director Myke Reid, \u201cwill help convince lawmakers that Congress must act soon to pass a responsible bill that will improve service, protect postal workers, and strengthen the Postal Service in the digital age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Postal Service Protection Act would:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fix the Postal Service\u2019s immediate financial crisis by ending the mandate that requires the USPS to pre-fund healthcare benefits for future retirees \u2014 a burden no other government agency or private company bears;<\/li>\n<li>Allow the Postal Service to recover overpayments the USPS made to federal pension plans;<\/li>\n<li>Re-establish overnight delivery standards for first-class mail, which would ensure the timely delivery of mail, help keep mail processing facilities open, and protect jobs;<\/li>\n<li>Protect six-day delivery;<\/li>\n<li>Allow the USPS to develop new products and services that would generate new sources of revenue, and<\/li>\n<li>Protect post offices by giving the Postal Regulatory Commission binding authority to prevent post offices from being closed based on the effect on the community and the effect on the employees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/issues-uspsfinances\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">more about fixing USPS finances<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 02, 2013 In the past week, eight more members of the U.S. House of Representatives became co-sponsors of the Postal Service Protection Act (H.R. 630), a bill that would help solve the USPS financial crisis without hurting workers or mail service.
