{"id":6082,"date":"2013-04-29T15:10:37","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T20:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=6082"},"modified":"2013-04-29T15:10:37","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T20:10:37","slug":"nalc-national-food-drive-is-saturday-may-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2013\/04\/29\/nalc-national-food-drive-is-saturday-may-11\/","title":{"rendered":"NALC National Food Drive is Saturday, May 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/food-drive2013.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6083\" title=\"food-drive2013\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/food-drive2013-300x168.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/food-drive2013-300x168.gif 300w, https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/food-drive2013.gif 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Questions regarding the food drive should be directed to NALC Director of Community Services Pam Donato at 202-662-2489 or at <\/em><a href=\"mailto:donato@nalc.org\"><em>donato@nalc.org<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With the NALC\u2019s 21st annual National Food Drive now just a few short weeks away, the pace of the behind-the-scenes work to make it go as smoothly as possible is reaching a fever pitch in hundreds of branches across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the second Saturday of May each year, thousands of letter carriers step forward and join our co-workers, family members, friends and community partners to pick up those all-important and often heavy sacks of donated non-perishable food items left by mailboxes,\u201d NALC President Fredric Rolando said. \u201cTo get us there takes the dedication of hundreds of branch food drive coordinators, who have spent the last few months ordering and mailing countless customer-reminder postcards, putting up food drive flyers and posters, and so much more\u2014often after spending the day delivering the mail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We do all of this because we know how important it is, Rolando said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we decided to take our food drive nationwide more than two decades ago, food banks and community service organizations told us that the best time for us to do it would be when people aren\u2019t really thinking about it\u2014to remind people that, sadly, the need for food is year-round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn November and December\u2014 around the holidays\u2014many folks get caught up in a spirit of giving, so food pantries and other such organization see a major upswing in food donations,\u201d he said. \u201cBut by May, their shelves begin to empty out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As men and women who touch every neighborhood in America six days a week, letter carriers far too often see first-hand how poverty and hunger affect the customers we serve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlus, many disadvantaged children, who depend on their schools for breakfast and lunch, will soon be on summer break, losing access to those free or subsidized meals,\u201d Rolando said, \u201cand that places increased pressure on food pantries and similar charitable organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo on May 11, many of us might go home that night dealing with a few extra aches and pains,\u201d he said,\u201cbut it\u2019s all worth it when we remember that we\u2019re helping to make sure someone will soon be getting the food they need, for themselves and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nalc.org\/commun\/foodrive\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">For Videos and More Information Click Here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Questions regarding the food drive should be directed to NALC Director of Community Services Pam Donato at 202-662-2489 or at donato@nalc.org.
