{"id":6031,"date":"2013-04-18T08:12:05","date_gmt":"2013-04-18T13:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=6031"},"modified":"2013-04-18T08:12:05","modified_gmt":"2013-04-18T13:12:05","slug":"rolando-testifies-before-house-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2013\/04\/18\/rolando-testifies-before-house-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolando testifies before House committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/3-NALC-News1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6032\" title=\"3-NALC News\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/3-NALC-News1-300x168.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/3-NALC-News1-300x168.gif 300w, https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/3-NALC-News1.gif 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>April 17, 2013 &#8212; NALC President Fredric Rolando was among those called to testify today on Capitol Hill before a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the Postal Service\u2019s financial situation.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing began with several representatives accusing Postal Service Board of Governors Chairman Mickey Barnett of backing away from USPS\u2019s announced plan to reduce the number of delivery days each week from six to five beginning in August because of intense pressure from postal unions.<\/p>\n<p>But under closer questioning from lawmakers, Barnett and Government Accountability Office Comptroller General Gene Dodaro made it clear that the decision not to unilaterally reduce the delivery schedule resulted from the need to follow the law, which calls for a six-day delivery schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Rolando said that on the merits, eliminating Saturday delivery would be a costly mistake that would not only make it harder for the Postal Service to grow the business but also would cost money by driving away customers.<\/p>\n<p>Testifying alongside Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe on the second panel, President Rolando said it was not necessary to reopen postal union contracts in search of cost savings. \u201cRenegotiating contracts is unnecessary,\u201d the president said, \u201cbecause our recently arbitrated agreement allows us to look for ways to work with the Postal Service to find cost reductions, in health care expenses and in an improved route adjustment process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore we start make changes to the workforce or to the delivery schedule,\u201d Rolando said, \u201cwe need to focus on deciding what Postal Service\u2019s mission is.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Committee members should focus on finding ways to strengthen the Postal Service for the future, not on slashing services and dismantling the universal network, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t see where this is a partisan issue,\u201d he told the committee. \u201cThis is America\u2019s Postal Service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nalc.org\/news\/latest\/downloads\/FVR-House-4-17-2013.PDF\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read President Rolando\u2019s submitted written testimony<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April 17, 2013 &#8212; NALC President Fredric Rolando was among those called to testify today on Capitol Hill before a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the Postal Service\u2019s financial situation.
