For those who do not work at USPS it may appear that the Postal Service is having a going out of business sale instead of a summer sale. The closure of branch after branch and office after office, and the consolidation of distribution centers across the nation seems to indicate that USPS isn’t only streamlining operations but shutting down operations.<\/p>\n

Recent news from across the nation reads like a fire sale:<\/p>\n

– Postal service may close 5 branches in Connecticut<\/a>
\n– Mail-sorting operations to move off Staten Island, officials told<\/a>
\n– Bay Ridge Post Office One of 18 That May Close in Brooklyn<\/a>
\n– U.S. Postal Service targeting Jackson’s delivery and distribution center for review; could result in closure<\/a><\/p>\n

The closure of post offices and USPS distribution centers has thousands of postal employees worried about their employment future with USPS – worried about the possibility of having to relocate – or concerned about whether or not they will be able to provide for their families.<\/p>\n

USPS has been around for over 200 years and has provided this nation with service second to none, but business after business are moving from hard copy mail to digital correspondence. The economic downturn is forcing newspapers to go Internet based instead of your usual daily newspaper. People send emails and instant messages instead of writing letters. In fact, there is an entire generation that has probably never received a love letter through the Postal Service.<\/p>\n

All of these issues seem to indicate that the U.S. Postal Service may be headed toward becoming obsolete in the near future.<\/p>\n

Here’s a thought – our nations government seems to be buying banks, auto manufacturers, and, who knows, possibly even hospitals soon – it may be a good idea for our government to advance a hostile take-over of United Parcel Service (UPS) – and possibly FedEx as well, merge their offices and services with the older giant USPS, and not only save America’s postal service, but streamline this nations redundant delivery services at the same time.<\/p>\n

Yes,\u00a0I know this could probably never happen, but the results of such mergers could save billions of dollars in delivery cost, reduce delivery fees, save millions of gallons of fuel, and level the distribution and delivery playing field to one mega source.<\/p>\n

Unions? Yes, they would remain intact but with changes. UPS employees would be represented by a Parcel and Package union, FedEx by their own union, and USPS unions would remain the same with minor changes. It may even be possible that each union could be managed under an\u00a0executive union that would negotiate for all of the service unions as one.<\/p>\n

Why wouldn’t it work? Our government and elected officials currently seem to be writing the rules as they move forward without even taking the time to read the laws that have been written and submitted to Congress. So, why couldn’t a plan such as this work? All they would need to do is write the rules as the plan moves forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
